It’s a Girl!!!

Well, the wait is over and after giving the ultrasound tech quite a challenge our little baby finally opened up her legs (that’s the last time till you’re 30 young lady!) and showed us what she’s got and with no doubt it’s a girl. We’ve chosen the name Linnea Ann. Linnea was the name of my grandmother who was one of the most amazing women I have ever met. I can only hope a little bit of her trickles down into my little girl. Ann was my other grandmother’s name and is Steph’s mom’s middle name so we went with that for the middle name, and we thought the flow went well.

For the record the boy name was Liam Alex and while we would have been exceedingly happy with a boy we’re both wanted a girl deep down so we’re elated.

And it may not come as a surprise, but I just registered linneanielsen.com :) We’ll keep using this site until she is born though.

We have great ultrasound photos to scan and put up, as well as a dvd that gives about a 2-3 minute tour of our little princess. Some of it is real clear, some of it is like reading an ink blot test. Watch those last few seconds for a shot of her sucking her thumb! I planned on putting all that up now, but the internet here at Atlanta Bread Company is very, very slow.

so for now we’ll say goodbye and we’ll have lot’s more for everyone to look at later.

Love Chris and Steph

Week 17 Update

Here’s what’s gone on in weeks 14 through 17:

  • Emy’s lungs are fully functional and can breathe amniotic fluid
  • She’s covered in peach fuzz
  • She’s now fully capable of making facial expressions and is practicing the “sad face” for her first trip to the toy store.
  • Joints are fully functional
  • She’s sensitive to light
  • total length is about 5 inches and weight is about 6 ounces (I don’t know what fruit that is, but it’s pretty close to a chicken breast)
  • Finger and toe prints…..check!
  • Emy can suck her thumb now
  • If Emy is a girl, she’s got a uterus and some kind of eggs now.
  • Bones are hardening and arms and legs are moving (Steph thinks she can feel movement)

13 Weeks and a Heartbeat

Mommy has informed me, in no uncertain terms, that I have in fact not done my part and if I know what’s good for me I should deliver the details myself :) Apparently she isn’t as impressed with the embedded audio player as I am.

Mommy is starting to feel better, though she still has her rough times. She lost a bit of weight, but has started to gain it back (in baby, of course) and is starting to show just a tiny bit. Get her in a tight t-shirt and you’ll see what I mean.

We went to the doctor today and got to hear the heartbeat. It was good and strong, around 160bpm (just slightly faster than mine). If you push play on the next post you can hear it in all 8 seconds of its glory.

Here are the vital stats since we last updated at 9 weeks (so Gramma knows what fruits to avoid):

  • Emy is between 2.5 and 3 inches, which I am going to call the size of a lemon, or a tangerine, or some other sort of citrus gramma wouldn’t eat anyway. (the book says the size of an apple, but that’s a pretty big range)
  • Emy weighs in at a whopping 1.5 ounces.
  • Emy’s amniotic sac is formed, which will help with temperature control
  • All major organs have been formed (including THAT one)
  • Emy the embryo is now Emy the fetus, though that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, so we’ll just stick to “Emy”
  • Emy has a big head, just like me. But unlike me her’s is about half of her total body length and also unlike me, she has a neck ;)
  • The hair pattern is discernible on the scalp (now where did I put my endoscope?)
  • Emy’s face is properly formed and eyelids are present
  • The fingers and toes have nails, but they’re still very soft.
  • Taste buds are formed
  • This line was going to be something gross, but Steph made me take it out.
  • Blood is circulating through the umbilical cord, which is bringing good stuff in and shipping bad stuff out (fetus “waste”)
  • The intestines have now migrated from the umbilical cord to the abdomen.
  • Eyes and ears are almost where they are going to stay
  • Houston, we have reflexes! (though rudimentary ones at most)

Next time we go to the doctor, which is July 24th, we will know whether Emy in an in-ee or an out-ee and everyone can start buying him or her stuff! We’re both really getting comfortable with the notion of either sex, and right now we’re actually torn between which we want. They both have their pluses and minuses so in a way when we learn the sex we’ll be both excited and a little disappointed, no matter what. The good news is we’ll be very happy with either sex, which is a long way from where we were a year or so ago.

Our First Peek at Emy

Well, it’s been a long time coming, but we finally both got a glimpse at our healthy little bambina. This was taken at 9 weeks, 3 days. you can see Emy’s little nubs, and her little head on the right. Next ultrasound isn’t until 18 weeks or so and at that point we’ll learn the sex. Mommy’s gother heart set on a jungle theme so she’s secretly hoping for a boy, but she thinks it’s a girl. I’m still pulling for a girl, but the jungle theme does sound nice. So here’s the photos! Emy 7 weeks 6 days

This week I’m working on parchment-like skin that you can see my veins right through. My teeth, palate, and larynx and beginning to take shape and I’m steadily getting bigger by the day. My eyes are continuing to develop this week too. My toes and fingers are prominent with very little, if any, webbing and my upper and lower limbs all show recognizable joints (elbows and knees) and the lower limb bones are starting to ossify this week. My head is still disproportionately larger than the rest of my body. By the end of the week I should be about the size of a large grape.

Emy 6 weeks and 3 days update

During this week my eyes continue to develop and begin to develop pigment. My fingers, toes, and outer ears are beginning to take shape and I about an inch long now. My facial features are starting to become visible this week including my mouth and tongue. My major muscle system is developing and pretty soon I will start to move, but mommy won’t be able to feel me cause I’m still too small for her to feel me. I’m working on my own blood type, distinct from mommy’s and my blood cells are working on being produced by my liver now instead of the yolk sac. With all the growing I’m doing it is making mommy not feel so hot, but in the end it will all be worth it.

Emy Update

Hello world. I’m five weeks and 3 days old today. At this point amniotic fluid has started to be produced, my eyes have started to develop and my umbilical cord has started to form. My hands have started to appear and major organs are now being formed. I’m about the size of an apple seed. Right around this time the two parts of my heart are fusing to form and finally start to beat. I’m busy growing and developing so I’m going to get back to it for now. Talk to you all later.
